Our Academic Approach
Our Academic Vision
The Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Boğaziçi University embraces the philosophy of liberal arts education. The fundamental mission of our faculty is to ensure
that students in the Departments of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Molecular Biology and Genetics attain academic competence. Accordingly, undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs are offered in all of our departments, and scientific research is supported through research centers operating under these departments.
Boğaziçi University’s contribution to higher education lies in delivering the most up-to-date knowledge in the basic sciences at the highest level through a broad range of courses. One of our primary goals is to provide students not only with theoretical knowledge but also with hands-on experimental training in our modern laboratories, while also involving them in the research projects of our faculty members. This creates a dynamic and productive academic environment.
As one of the most established faculties of science in Turkey, our faculty conducts both fundamental scientific research and innovative studies, hosting applied projects as well. Numerous national and international projects are supported by institutions such as the Scientific Research Projects Fund (BAP), the Ministry of Development, TÜBİTAK, the European Union (EU), as well as the private sector. The results of these projects are disseminated by our researchers through international scientific journals, books, and conferences. Last year alone, our faculty members published 7 book chapters, 262 scientific articles, and 22 conference papers. Currently, 53 research projects are ongoing within our faculty.
In line with the emphasis placed on interdisciplinary studies, there are a total of 29 double-major and 2 minor programs available. All undergraduate students benefit from a wide range of elective courses offered by each department, enabling them to pursue academic paths aligned with their interests and talents.
The elective courses offered by our faculty are not only designed for our own students but also provide a rich and interdisciplinary portfolio accessible to students across the university. Through international agreements and exchange programs established at both faculty and departmental levels, our students and academic staff keep pace with global developments and share their knowledge and research with colleagues in other countries.
In addition to training the next generation of successful researchers who will contribute to the international scientific community, the departments of our faculty also meet the fundamental science course requirements of other faculties at the university, particularly the Faculty of Engineering. The service courses provided by our faculty constitute 30% of the total graduation credits for students in the Faculty of Engineering, and in some departments of the Faculty of Education, this ratio exceeds 50%.
Each academic semester, our faculty offers around 100 different courses, and when course sections are included, this number approaches 200. The high-quality academic programs, research activities, projects, and scientific publications produced within our university make significant contributions both to the academic development of students and to the advancement of science. In this context, our faculty provides a productive academic environment that enables students to shape their career plans and achieve their professional goals.
